Letter From The Exectuve Director
Picture of Michael NorrisWe're one week into fall as I write this, and the arts season is in full swing. This means that Art-Reach audiences are once again visiting cultural organizations all over the Philadelphia region. We're especially excited about a new outreach to the Wilmington cultural community that we'll be rolling out this fall with the support and participation of AstraZeneca, the Delaware Division of the Arts and VSA arts of Delaware. We want to provide more cultural access to special-needs audiences in the Wilmington area, as well as help the arts organizations there to enhance their community outreach and develop new audiences. Our specific goals are to recruit more member agencies and schools and to encourage arts organizations to participate in the Art-Reach Ticketing Program and online Access Guide.

Art-Reach is also actively involved in planning for a new regionwide cultural-access initiative called Independence Starts Here!. This collaborative effort, led by Amaryllis Theatre Company and Art-Reach, is bringing together dozens of arts groups, city agencies and other organizations interested in increasing cultural participation among people with disabilities. It's an exciting project that will make improved access a major goal for the cultural community and help Art-Reach serve even more audiences.

Some other cool stuff is also in the works. This includes a streamlined and easier-to-navigate website, a public calendar of accessible arts events, and-boring for you but oh-so-exciting for the Art-Reach staff – a new database that will vastly improve our information-management and customer-service capabilities.

So as always, there's a lot going on, and I welcome your feedback, questions and ideas for how we can improve our services and enhance our mission.

13th Annual Jazz Brunch and Silent Auction Celebrates Artists and Access
Art-Reach hosted our 13th Annual Jazz Brunch & Silent Auction on Sunday, November 7, in the Grand Ballroom at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue from 11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. This year’s event highlighted the artists we work with in our In-Facility Program, and we honored Ron and Suzanne Naples and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for their commitment to cultural access.

The event featured performances by the Ralph Penn Trio and Marlon Simon & Nagual Spirits, two well-known Philadelphia jazz artists who delight Art-Reach audiences regularly. In addition, guests enjoyed a delicious brunch and an extensive auction of travel, sports and entertainment packages and an exclusive collection of private, behind-the-scenes events at some of the region’s leading cultural organizations.

Auction highlights included: 1) two courtside 76ers tickets and dinner at the exclusive Victors Club in the Wachovia Center; 2) one-week stay at a two-bedroom waterfront condo in the Florida Keys with tennis courts, swimming pool and tropical gardens; 3) private guided tour for eight of the galleries, vault and conservation lab of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; and 4) serving as the live, on-air co-host for "The Sunday Night Supper Club" with DJ Ken Schaffer on radio station Cruisin' 92.1. Raffle tickets were sold for chance to win an all-expenses paid, four-day Apple Vacation courtesy of Harmelin Media.

To inquire about how to get involved in the 14th Annual Jazz Brunch and Silent Auction, contact Development Officer Meredith Palmateer.

"Thank you so very much for offering us discounted tickets through Art-Reach. A group of adults with developmental disabilities visited Morris Arboretum as an outing for our work training facility. We truly enjoyed touring your beautiful gardens and especially enjoyed the garden railroad. The staff was so helpful and we had such a wonderful day."

Mission Statement

Art-Reach is committed to increasing access to the arts for traditionally underserved audiences. Art-Reach's primary activities to overcome financial and physical barriers and make the arts more accessible are:

– The Ticketing Program, which distributes donated and discounted tickets to performing arts events, museums, and other cultural institutions.
– The In-Facility Program, which brings the arts directly to our constituents through on-site performances and arts activities at participating agencies and schools.
– The Workshop Program, which provides in-depth, participatory arts programs that address specific social needs on an as-needed basis.
– The Access Guide, the region’s premier resource for structural and programmatic accessibility information about arts and cultural venues and organizations, available in printed form and online at www.art-reach.org.

Agency Perspective

Being a volunteer for Art-Reach has provided a number of beneficial experiences for me. I moved to Philadelphia from Ann Arbor, Michigan, in August 2000. After attending graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, I had more time to explore the numerous fine art venues in the city. Art-Reach fulfilled this need and gave me the opportunity to be involved with the community by exposing more individuals to art, music and theater. I have met many diverse groups of people from all over the Philadelphia area through my involvement with this organization. From salsa music and Broadway tunes with the Philly Pops to classic movies at the Prince Music Theater, Art-Reach groups have enjoyed performances they might otherwise have missed, and they have developed a new appreciation for the plentiful talent thriving at our city's cultural venues. I am honored to be a part of the Art-Reach family and to be helping underserved audiences experience the arts

Generating Community
In April Art-Reach and Full Circle Theater finished a year and a half long intergenerational workshop program in lower Northeast Philadelphia. In the third and final session of Generating Community middle-school students and seniors used living histories from the Bridesburg/Lower Wissinoming neighborhoods to explore community issues in a safe, welcoming environment. The final presentation took place on April 28th at the Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Bridesburg.

Generating Community Image 1Participants also received free tickets to the Philadelphia Flower Show and went on a field trip to the National Constitution Center. In addition, Art-Reach has offered ongoing access to our Ticketing Program for all participants of the program and their family members, which includes arts and cultural opportunities in theater, dance and museums. If you are a resident of Bridesburg/Lower Wissinoming and are interested in utilizing Art-Reach's programs, contact Mildred Ganizsewski, who has volunteered her time to act as the Art-Reach liaison.

Generating Community was made possible through a grant from the Community Partnership Initiative of the Rohm and Haas Company and the hospitality of the Bridesburg Heritage Center.

AstraZeneca
Generating Community Image 1On May 2 Art-Reach honored Founder and former Executive Director Joyce W. Burd at the Pyramid Club in Center City. Over 100 people came out to pay tribute to Joyce Burd for her tireless dedication to arts access. Joyce was honored with a ceremonial Liberty Bell from the City of Philadelphia for her commitment to the community. The event showcased performances by several Art-Reach artists, including dancer Mafalda Thomas-Bouzy and heGenerating Community Image 1r group of African drummers, bassist Sharif Abdullah and his guitar ensemble as well as folksinger Daria.

The event raised over $25,000, which was used to establish the Joyce W. Burd Program Enhancements Fund as part of the five-year Campaign for Art-Reach. This special fund will enable Art-Reach to expand our mission to connect special-needs audiences and the arts by strengthening core programs and adding new ones.

Art-Reach Gives Scholarships
This summer Art-Reach provided scholarships to a family of four children from the Women Against Abuse shelter to participate in an art camps offered by the Philadelphia Art Alliance. The camp explored the connection between science and art. The children created projects based on popular science fiction stories, including symbolic jewelry from The Lord of the Rings, super-hero costumes and machine sculptures. They also traveled to the Academy of Natural Sciences for a live fossil dig and solar system party.

Funding for these scholarships came from the new Joyce W. Burd Program Enhancements Fund. Contact Executive Director Michael Norris if you would like to support this fund or to suggest another unique partnership opportunity that would enhance Art-Reach's impact.

Art-Reach Announces New Programs
Art-Reach has launched two new programs for corporate partners. Our Corporate Circle is a free program that enables companies to donate to Art-Reach any unused tickets they may have to the cultural events they sponsor. The Adopt-an-Agency program allows companies to target their Art-Reach support to the human-service agencies, schools or community groups that they are already invested in. Charter members of these new programs include Harmelin Media, Lincoln Financial Group, PECO Energy and PNC Bank.
