Promotional Poster for Wilma Theater's presentation of Language Rooms

Wilma Theater Presents: Language Rooms

Ahmed is a shining example of the American Dream, successfully landing a big-time position as translator at a top secret detainment facility. But things aren’t as they seem in this twisted workplace, and he soon finds himself the subject of closely monitored video cameras and absurd office mind games. From Yussef El Guindi, an exciting playwright whose work has been praised by The New York Times as "very funny", Language Rooms is a provocative dark comedy about the cost of the War on Terror and the true meaning of “loyalty.” Brilliantly shifting between comedy and political suspense, this World Premiere play conjures up a surprising twist not to be given away.

Players Club of Swarthmore Presents: Doubt

Sister Aloysius, the principal of a Catholic school in the Bronx, thinks it is entirely in the order of things that the students in her school are terrified of her. Father Flynn, her new teacher, thinks a school should be ruled by love, not fear. Young Sister James, caught in the power struggle between the two, is torn between her duty to her superior and her sympathy for the priest's beliefs; but she is also tormented by doubts about the behavior of the priest's favorite student. Theatre Exile Presents: Shining City

Theatre Exile will close the season with the Philadelphia premiere of Shining City by Conor McPherson, the award-winning playwright of The Weir and The Seafarer. Two men meet as doctor and patient in a small office in Dublin. The patient, John, is being haunted by visions of his wife for whose accidental death he feels inexplicably responsible. The psychiatrist, Ian, has his own ghosts since leaving first the church then his new family. Both men move through their sense of guilt and culpability looking to find redemption in the most unlikely places. A hauntingly beautiful piece, Shining City is “as close to perfection as modern play writing gets” (New York Times). Conor McPherson is a modern master storyteller, creating arias that reveal character through unfinished thoughts, silences and raw human emotion.

Promo Photo for When We Go Upon the Sea

Friday, April 16th, 2010 at 8:00pm

Interact Theatre Co. Presents: When We Go Upon the Sea

WHEN WE GO UPON THE SEA is a provocative new play by Tony Award nominated playwright Lee Blessing, author of A WALK IN THE WOODS, WHORES, and GOING TO ST. IVES. Set in a high-end hotel room at The Hague, WHEN WE GO UPON THE SEA imagines former President George W. Bush on the eve of his trial for international war crimes. Tended to by an inscrutable Dutch butler and an alluring masseuse, the President embarks on a long night of drinking, joking, and ruminating, taking the audience through a deep exploration of how we regard our leaders - loving them, fearing them, unintentionally deifying them. WHEN WE GO UPON THE SEA examines an American populace that has grown strikingly complacent in the wake of extraordinary global challenges, exposing one of the world’s most intriguing and influential conflicts: the battle between the elected leader of the free world and a democracy of millions.

The Lantern Theater Presents: Henry IV part I

If you enjoyed our darkly comic, Barrymore Award-winning Richard III, you'll love this gripping, ripping plot from Shakespeare's history canon.

King Henry, having seized the throne of England from his tyrannical cousin, finds himself in a political hornet's nest. As trouble brews, he is horrified to see his own son and heir keeping company with thieves, drunkards, and whores. Witness the tug of war for the soul of young Prince Hal between his tortured, guilt-ridden father and Sir John Falstaff, a charming and insinuating rogue. As Hal wavers, the King's ambitious enemies, led by the dazzling young Hotspur, are on the rise. Prince Hal must make hard choices and face his fears as civil war threatens to swallow up the kingdom.

Promo Photo for When We Go Upon the Sea

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010 at 7:00pm
