Eastern State Penitentiary

Opened in 1829 as part of a controversial movement to change the behavior of inmates through "confinement in solitude with labor," Eastern State Penitentiary quickly became one of the most expensive and most copied buildings in the young United States. Some of America's most notorious criminals were held in the Penitentiary including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone.

The museum features guided and self guided tours, in addition to on ongoing art installations.

Hours of Operation: Mon. - Fri. 10am - 4pm  

Guided Tours: Are Available for Groups of 5 or more and are only available at the following times 9am, 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm, and 4pm.

Self Guided Audio Tours: Are Available for Group of 4 or less.

America's first art museum and art school. The collection features American works from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries; the building is a national historic landmark and a work of art on its own, designed in the High Victorian Gothic style.
