Workshop Program

The Workshop Program brings performing and visual artists into facilities serving disabled and disadvantaged audiences on an on-going basis, which allows for a more in-depth and richer arts experience. Participants have the opportunity to develop an interest in a particular art form that may lead to lifelong activity; discover artistic expression and creativity as being an important part of living; and interact and communicate effectively within the workshop setting. The Workshop Program was created out of a need expressed by our participants for more hands-on and interactive arts experiences. Workshop Programs are scheduled as funding permits.

Past workshops have included:

2003-2004: In a Workshop Program funded by the Rohm and Haas Company, we collaborated with Temple University’s Full Circle Theater to present an 18-month, three-part Workshop Program for residents of the Bridesburg/Wissinoming section of Northeast Philadelphia.  The workshop encompassed three intergenerational, improvisational theater sessions involving seniors and middle-school students. Participants also received free tickets to arts and cultural events such as the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia Flower Show and field trips to the National Constitution Center and the National Liberty Museum.

Knight Foundation, we are conducting a three-year workshop program involving three Art-Reach member agencies in North Philadelphia and three pairs of multi-disciplinary arts partners.  Our partners for this project include the Mural Arts Program, the Clay Studio, Strings for Schools, Spiral Q Puppet Theater, InterAct Theatre Company and Philadelphia Young Playwrights. The first workshop, which ran from July to December 2005, involved the Clay Studio (TCS) and Strings for Schools (SFS).  Through TCS workshops and an SFS string-quartet residency, women and children will strengthen their relationships by working together to make musical instruments from everyday materials and clay and learning how to perform on them.

These workshops are held on Saturdays at the Pennsylvania Academy, Broad and Cherry Streets in Philadelphia. Art-Reach groups can participate in the regularly scheduled Family Workshops, which are open to the public. Art-Reach groups whose members need extra attention have the opportunity to attend a workshop just for Art-Reach groups. These workshops are held once a month.
