Students learn about traditional samba dances, and many of the musical instruments that now are played in Brazil: flute, guitar, piano, violin, cavaquinho (a small guitar), guitar and tambourine. Poetry shatters the brittle husk of the familiar and reveals the pulsing reality beneath it. Moving past stale perceptions, we see with newborn innocence. Experiencing our inner and outer worlds with unclouded eyes -- whether pleasant or painful -- becomes a marvelous adventure!
When we speak our truth with freshness and originality, we 're empowered by how directly it impacts other hearts and minds. We experience ourselves as creators, bearers of meaning, and emissaries of beauty. We honor what is and make peace with it. We heal in powerful ways.
As the wise ones of all cultures have always known, every human being is a poet, with the gift of a unique voice and the desire to have it heard. Giving voice to one's being requires no sophisticated skills -- only a deeply listening ear and perhaps a bit of nurturing. In my workshops, we regain our birthright. In a trusting, pressure-free setting, we come to experience poetry as natural, joyful, and freeing. We find our own voice, share parts of ourselves we may not even have known were there, and appreciate each other through our stories. In the words of storyteller Rex Ellis, "It's hard to hate someone whose story you know."
Naila Claudia Schulte, Ed.D. taught English and ESOL in the Philadelphia schools for 30 years. During the last 20, she taught poetry writing at every available opportunity after discovering its vast potential for engaging those without a voice, transforming lives, and promoting language learning in unexpected and intriguing ways. She compiled her students’ poetry into anthologies, and in 2005 an exhibition of their work was held at the School District of Philadelphia Administration Building.
In addition to giving professional workshops over the years, Naila wrote an article about teaching poetry writing which was published in both a professional journal and a book on imagination in language learning. Her poems have been published in the Mad Poets Review.
Also a singer/songwriter, Naila has performed at music open mics and benefits throughout the Philadelphia area. In 2004, on the basis of an anti-war song she wrote, she was invited to do a 30-minute set at the AFSC's 9-11 commemoration. In 2009 she was chosen as a People's Choice winner at the Folk Factory in Mt. Airy, where she performed in concert. Now retired, Naila holds student workshops in her community and occasionally performs at poetry open mics. She believes that the important thing is to use our natural music to get at what's inside us, whether it's emotions that are "on top", stories we want to tell, or things we want to get off our chest. “What do I feel is important?” Naila asks. “Honesty, listening to one's inner voice, avoiding old ways of saying things...and of course, the courage to share one's creations.”
Structure for all of Naila's Programs: Workshops can be customized to suit any age level and a wide range of verbal abilities, though they are best suited for mid to high cognitive level. For elders or others who may have difficulty writing, poems can be dictated if the facility can provide at least two assistants.

Program I: Express Yourself with Poetry |
Beginning with activities aimed at finding expression through their own voice, participants gradually learn to incorporate other ways to make their language sparkle -- such as detailed sense imagery, simile and metaphor, rhythm and repetition, and honing words for maximum impact. We read and listen to model poems, engage with physical objects to understand imagery, and possibly write to music. Meditation or relaxation exercises may be incorporated, as well as opportunities to collaborate. Reading original works, sometimes to musical accompaniment, adds a note of fun and self-validation -- though there's no pressure to do so, since trust and comfort are essential for creating a positive experience for all. Drawing from these activities, this workshop will include a carefully sequenced set of experiences designed to provide participants with the basic tools and motivation to continue writing on their own. Activities and timing will be tailored to the needs and abilities of the group. Class size: 20 participant maximum. Smaller groups are encouraged for more intimate and meaningful experiences. |
| Program II: Expanding Our Poetic Horizons | Geared towards groups that are more advanced and/or receptive, this workshop would include a fuller range of activities than detailed above. Class size: 20 participant maximum. Smaller groups are encouraged for more intimate and meaningful experiences.
|
| Program III: Evolving Toward Excellence in Poetry | An ongoing series of workshops can be arranged which would allow for a wider field of exploration, and the development of writing skills over time. Class size: 20 participant maximum. Smaller groups are encouraged for more intimate and meaningful experiences.
|
Add-On Experience for Programs I-III
|
|
| Published Anthology | Participants' work will be compiled into a booklet (with their permission), or made into a collection of laminated decorative sheets suitable for posting. These will be mailed within one week of the workshop.
|
Program IV: Finding Your Musical Voice |
An introduction to songwriting: Participants interested in expressing themselves through song become familiar with simple song styles and terminology through reading and listening. Learn how to create a chorus, verse, and bridge to transform your words to lyrics, giving your voice a new sound. Together and individually, using group and 1-on-1 interactions, participants put their feelings, thoughts and stories into basic blues and folk song patterns, with guitar accompaniment provided by the instructor. Class size: 12 participant maximum. Smaller groups are encouraged for more intimate and meaningful experiences. |
Add-On Experience for Program IV
|
|
| Group Recording | At their option, participants may have their song included in a compilation of the group's songs (not professional quality). |

I see the need for exposing people to the power of learning through the arts. I believe it is also very valuable for kids to experience and work with someone who is passionate about what they do, someone who can have fun in a creative learning/teaching process, and someone who is a leading example by being what they wanted to be when they 'grew up.'
